My dog needs heartworm prevention. Topical or oral for mosquitoes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 9 lbs

Hi, we live in the Canary Islands and would like to know what is the best prevention for heartworm in dogs as there are many mosquitoes here at the moment. Is a topical solution better than a tablet? Thankyou for any advice.

The dog should be heartworm tested and then started on a prevention, if negative. Heartgard, Interceptor, and Sentinel are all oral medications that work well with preventing heartworms. You should also treat him with a flea/tick prevention. I like oral NexGard, Bravecto, or Credellio instead of the topical spot on solutions.
