My dog has a new, painless skin lump. What could it be and what to do?

Hi. I was wondering if you could shed any light on what this skin lesion may be? whisper is completely systemically well and doesn’t seem particularly tender if I touch it. Only noticed 24 hrs ago and we would normally notice it if it was there previously as we tick check daily. It’s not inconceivable that she has some form of foreign body (?tick head remnant, echidna spine), but I can’t feel anything firm in it Usually well. Not previous dermatitis etc

Hi and thanks for posting! It is hard to say exactly what Whisper's skin lesion may be from a picture alone, but I could offer a few possibilities and next steps. It could as you say be a tick remnant if ticks are a concern in your area. Other possibilities include a cyst, infected hair follicle, small tumor/mass, or other skin disorder. I would recommend monitoring it for growth or change. If you notice it is getting larger, becoming red, irritated, or has discharge coming from it, I would recommend Whisper see her veterinarian. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
