Why is my dog lethargic and crying out in pain when touched?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 9 months old | 31 lbs

Lulu seems very lethargic and is constantly whining and yelling like she is in pain. Her nose is cool and wet and her tongue seems normal. I have checked for the obvious thorn or cut and nothing. No matter where I touch her she’s crying out in pain. What can I do or what should I look for to help?

If poor Lulu is in that much pain I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian. She may have back, neck or abdominal pain. With severe pain it is common for animals to anticipate pain and react even before they are touched. A vet would hopefully be able to localize pain based on a physical examination and make recommendations about testing as well as prescribe safe pain medication if needed.
