Can I use Revolution for dog ticks and fleas, or do I need more?

Can Revolution be used to prevent ticks on dogs? I live on Long Island, NY where ticks are quite prevalent, and I have my Shih Tzu on Revolution. Would that be enough for ticks as well, or should I also use a Seresto collar during the summer months. I would switch to Frontline but my dog was still able to get fleas while on that I’m the past. also, what effect does American dog ticks have on dogs exactly?

Revolution does not protect against fleas, so I'd recommend using a medication such as Nexgard which protects against fleas and ticks (including American dog ticks). It's a monthly oral flea treatment program. That way, you don't need to combine two medications to give Candy protection against fleas and ticks. Typically, I do not recommend using two different flea treatment programs togethers. The American dog tick can spread diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Tularemia. Revolution provides good flea and tick control but also is a common heartworm prevention. They make oral flea and tick medicines that last for one month (nexgard and simparica) or three months (bravecto) but these do not cover heartworms. The only pill to cover heartworms and fleas is Trifexis but it is not very good for ticks.

Revolution isn't licensed for all ticks so if ticks are a problem then I do recommend using both. You could also consider an oral flea and tick product like Naxguard or Brevecto as well if Lucy's skin becomes irritated using both topical products at the same time.

We have been giving our cat Revolution and just realized it doesn't cover ticks. We just have him his monthly dose too! Is there any supplemental product we can give for ticks today/or this month?
You are correct, revolution will not kill ticks and is only effective against fleas, heartworm,intestinal roundworm, hookworm and ear mites. If ticks are a threat in your area than a product containing fipronil (frontline spray) can be used after 10-14days When next treatment is due, discuss broader treatments with your vet including broadline (ticks, fleas and worms) spot on or using separate internal and external parasite preventions to treat fleas/ticks and worms separately to ensure all risks are covered

Can we use revolution and k9 advantix together? My dog gets sick from any heart worm treatment by mouth but I don't think she is getting good flea control with revolution. I would rather not use a collar.
Hi yes you can use both treatments on Daphne but i suggest separating the application by two weeks. You can also consider using a product like Proheart6 - an injectable heartworm prevention given at the vet hospital that lasts for 6mths. I find that revolution works well for fleas, but doesn't cover all types of ticks. Hope this helps!

Congratulations on your new dog! I like Revolution if you are looking for a topical product. It consistently works well and is well tolerated. If you like the idea of an oral product better, I like Trifexis (it’s another all in one product). Sometimes though the pets can smell the Trifexis and they won’t eat it. In that instance, I like Simparica and Interceptor. My personal preference is oral products. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It is ok if my dog is on Revolution for me to also use Adams Plus Flea and Tick collar?
Those two products are usually fine to use together. However in some very sensitive dogs that could cause muscle tremors and shaking. I would wait at least 2-3 days after applying the Revolution before placing a collar on Cadbury. If he has any tremors/shaking remove the collar and alert your veterinarian. If revolution is not working for your flea/tick control you could consider adding on nexguard which is an oral flea and tick medication or even a Seresto collar.

You are very welcome! For most pets, Revolution is fine for heartworm prevention unless your area is experiencing very high levels of heartworm exposure or immunity to the product. Call your veterinarian and ask if there is a specific reason that he/she recommends an additional heartworm prevention. It’s always best to gather all the information! He doesn't need both Bravecto and Revolution at the same time. I would instead switch him to a heartworm preventative only such as Heartgard or Triheart and give him Bravecto for flea/tick coverage. Revolution does heartworm and fleas really well but just not ticks, so in order to get full coverage I would just do them separate. Another option would be to do Revolution and a Preventic collar which will give you good tick coverage. Lyme vaccine is a 1 year vaccination, I am not sure why they told you this is a 1 time thing. I would request your pet get the Lyme (Borrelia burgdorferi )vaccine annually as it is recommended by the AAHA vaccine guidelines. Here is a link to their website as well. Great question! Nexgard kills the deer tick as well as fleas and American dog tick/rocky mountain tick, and lone star tick. It is an oral pill as well, so I would us that for your dogs. Because Nexgard doesn't protect again heartworms, you will have to give your dogs Heartgard as well, which is available by prescription only from the vet. Advantix is a spot on treatment that treats the same things as Nexgard, but you would also have to use Heartgard as well for the heartworms. These two medications (Nexgard and Advantix) are for dogs only. As for the cats, Simparica prevents five types of ticks, so this may work for your cats :-)

Is Revolution necessary for my indoor cat? Or can I use a flea and tick treatment such as Advantage?
Hello, and thanks for your question about Mazie. This is a great question, and it really comes down to a question of how significant is the risk of disease exposure to Mazie, vs the cost of preventative. I see you live in Georgia - given how prevalent heartworm disease is in your area, as well as intestinal parasites, my advice would be to stick with Revolution in order to have a more broad-spectrum product to address heartworm disease and intestinal parasites in addition to external parasites like fleas and ticks. That's to cover your bases in case the rare mosquito finds its way into your home, or in case Mazie sneaks out. But, again it comes down to risk and cost. If you feel that you live in a home that's pretty mosquito-proof, and if Mazie is not prone to sneaking outside once in awhile, then her heartworm and intestinal parasite risk is probably low enough that a flea/tick product would suffice.
