My dog has pancreatitis. Why are her back legs weak and unbalanced?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 18.6 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with Pancreatitis this past Tuesday. She has been eating slowly and drinking, also using the bathroom. Today, she started having trouble with her back legs. It almost looks like temporary paralysis. After about 30 seconds she regains her composure and walks better, though a bit unbalanced.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lily. I am sorry to hear about of her recent troubles. The pancreatitis should not interfere with her mobility or cause hind limb weakness. She will need to see her veterinarian again as this is likely a new problem. She could have joint pain, a neurological disorder or a vestibular issue affecting her balance. Pancreatitis can cause abdominal pain, but that its typically displayed as you have described. In the meantime, keep her quiet and help her move as necessary. Continue her treatment protocol as prescribed for the pancreatitis. Good luck!
