Why are my dog's nipples irritated after giving birth to puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

Hello! My dog Bella just gave birth to puppies 10 days ago, this is her first time ever having a liter. She's been a great mom and has been so well with her pups. I've noticed her nipples look like this and I'm worried, she doesn't seem to have any signs of mastitis and her living quarters are very clean! I haven't clipped the pups nails, but they do seem to pull and tug a lot. The pups all seem to be getting fed and gaining weight as well. With her nipples Is this common? Thank you!!!

Thank you for your question. I think that she appears completely fine. It is normal to see a little skin irritation and what is visible in the photos is not worrisome. The puppies nails can scratch her and that is most likely the cause. As the start to develop teeth, watch for more serious problems, but so far she looks good.
