My dog's face is swollen with nasal discharge after dental work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 14 years and 10 months old

My dog went through dental operation and has been on antibiotics for 2 weeks. He had nasal discharge for weeks. It lessened but did not go away after medication. He still sneezes; reverse sneezes and there is watery mucus. His face is swollen on one side. I saw this weeks ago but it was so slight I thought it was normal. Now I'm suspicious about it since nasal discarge does not go away. Can they be related? What are the symptoms if he is cancer? Did the vet not recognize during operation?Help:(

I'm so sorry to hear that Spike is having this problem. From your history, it sounds like the nasal discharge started before the dental operation. If that is the case and the dental did not improve the discharge, then it might be time to take some x-rays of the nose and teeth. If there is a tooth that is infected at the root, it may look normal in the mouth, but may have signs of infection on x-rays. That can also cause swelling. The only treatment will be to remove the tooth. Cancer will most commonly cause bleeding instead of just normal nasal discharge, but is always possible. Unfortunately, it sounds like Spike needs some more testing to figure out what is going on and determine the best treatment to make him feel better. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
