Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 65 lbs
Hello, I got my dog dewormed (Drontal Plus) 5 days ago and It’s passing loose stools since then, is it normal? I’m giving him probiotic/prebiotic (Synbiotic D-C), is there anything else I could do to relieve this symptom? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Motaz! It isn't uncommon for diarrhea to occur after deworming. Also the worms can cause diarrhea. I like that you started a probiotic. I would also start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If the diarrhea continues through the weekend I recommend you have tour Vet do an exam Monday and get medications. I wish you and Motaz the nest!

I recommend to call your veterinarian. It's possible the loose stool is due to the worms, the medication or the spay procedure (the most common side effects of sedation are vomiting and diarrhea). Diarrhea that continues beyond 2 days can allow a bacteria shift which can continue the diarrhea. The vet may want to treat the diarrhea now. A bland diet may also help. I hope this helps.

I am not sure. You didn't mention how much you gave? However, it sounds like your pet may have colitis (inflamed colon) possibly due to the roundworms or even from additional worms that are present. Not all worms are visible by the naked eye, which is why we recommend a fecal exam (looking at the stool under the microscope after allowing any potential eggs to float to the surface using a salt based solution and centrifuge machine). I would recommend taking your pet in to the vet to have his stool examined and then he may need an additional dewormer or a short course of antibiotics (i.e. Metronidazole) +/- probiotics (you can try over the counter Culturelle) to completely resolve the suspected colitis. Best wishes with your pet and his loose stool. Take care.
