My dog has diarrhea with blood. Is it an emergency or can I wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Italian Greyhound | 2 years and 11 months old

My 10lb Italian Greyhound has had diarrhea for almost 3 days now. He seems to be drinking fine and today I’ve fed him boiled chicken and he ate fine with no vomiting. He doesn’t seem lethargic and his gums seem pink (no signs of dehydration). I just noticed spots of blood in his diarrhea, and now I’m really concerned. Should I consider emergency services? Or call the vet when they open in about 9 hours?

The blood in his diarrhea could be due to irritation of the GI tract since he's had diarrhea for three days. As long as he is eating without vomiting, isn't lethargic, and is drinking water, you can wait until the morning to have him see a vet. Now if he starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, the amount of blood in his diarrhea increases, he stops eating, and/or he stops drinking, then I would take him into an ER vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
