Should I use a shock collar or positive reinforcement for off-leash?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | spayed | 8 months and 10 days old | 50 lbs

I’m teaching her offleash heeling. She is super good! Will walk past turkies and dogs! Once in a while she won’t sit when I stop she will sit in front of me, or sniff and lag. But only 1% of the time and will come immediately. Should I use a e collar (shock) for safety or keep using positive reforcement only?

Hi there. It sounds like you're doing a great job with Sienna so far. I would not recommend using a shock collar with her - this is not necessary for reliable training, and often creates other issues with fear or aggression. Instead, continue proofing her skills with positive reinforcement by providing her with gradually harder and harder challenges, and rewarding her generously when she chooses to stay with you.
