When can I safely move my hamster mom and babies to a new cage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed

Hello! My hamster recently had babies but I didn’t know she was pregnant. It’s getting to the time where I can clean the cage but I want to move the mom and babies into a larger enclosure. Will this stress them?

It really depends on how old Frankie's babies are, if they are still curled up in the best I would try your best not to disturb them. However if they are older and exploring about as long as you are gentle and don't leave any separated for too long you can move them fine.

Hi there and thanks for posting this question! I would wait about 2 weeks after whelping prior to any major changes. I agree that it may stress Mom a little too much at this time. Best of luck and have fun watching those babies! Thank you for using Pet Coach.
