My senior dog is struggling to breathe. Is it time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 14 years and 10 months old | 28 lbs

Shih-poo almost 15 years in age. Severe collapsing trachea, enlarged heart, heart murmur, scarring in lungs, partial kidney failure. Now panting heavily, even in sleep, sometimes honking noises exhaling and clicking noises inhaling. Gums currently still pink. Is he in danger of it completely collapsing? Trying to determine if euthanasia is appropriate at this time.

Although rare a respiratory crisis is possible which is very distressing for both patient and owner. Given the severity of his numerous conditions and his symptoms during sleep I would agree that yes, euthanasia is a valid consideration at this stage.
