My old dog has a perineal hernia. Can neutering help avoid surgery?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 4 months old

My dog has been diagnosed with Perinial hernia, it is not large, would neutering help he is 9yrs and 5 months. Trying to not have massive surgery at his age. Thank you x

Yes, I would recommend at the least having Dino neutered. Perianal hernias are almost always due to increased testosterone levels which weakens the muscle of the pelvic floor. Neutering would help prevent further damage to these muscles but would not reverse the problem. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
