Why is my diabetic dog vomiting brown liquid? Is it organ failure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | unneutered | 65 lbs

My 7year old border collie was diagnosed with diabetes 14mths ago. He’s stable on 18units of Caninsulin 2x daily. Cataracts have already set in, so he’s going blind - but he’s recently started vomiting brown liquid/bile, most days. Is this the final stage, showing signs that his organs are failing? I don’t want Charlie suffering, and need to figure out the kinder thing. Thankyou

Poor Charlie! I'm sorry to hear that he's having this problem. Diabetes is not a progressive disease, so a well-controlled dog can live many years with a good quality of life if no complications occur. Vomiting daily is not a normal part of diabetes, so I would be concerned that something else may be going on. This problem may be very treatable, so I would recommend taking him back to your veterinarian for an exam. He/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help determine what is causing the vomiting and get him started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.
