Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 14 lbs

So my dog has dry skin all year round and I try to maintain it with dandriff shampoo and special dry shampoo. I know sometimes this can be there manual system, so I'm wondering what type of food would be good for this? I feed him dry blue buffalo or the dry wellness and for wet I get fresh pet it's called. Thank you

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The diet I prefer for this is the one made by Science Diet called sensitive skin and stomach diet. However, what I have found the most helpful in reestablishing a nice shiny coat is using fish oil daily. You can get the commercial ones sold online or at your local pet store. This works great. Good luck and have a great day!

Hello. There are quite a few dog foods that are labeled for sensitive skin. Hill's makes a very good one that you can get in all better pet stores or at Tractor supply. Rather than coconut oil, the fish oils are generally considered better for skin issues. I would stop the coconut oils & start a fish oil supplement. The best one is Nordic Naturals for pets available on-line. If the itching continues, then you may be dealing with a food or even inhalant allergen. You will need the help of your veterinarian to work through this as we do have excellent allergy medications for dogs, but they do require a prescription to use. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
