Cat has deep ticks near butt. Should I wait for Bravecto or go to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 10 lbs

Hi, my cat has about 6 ticks right around her butt hole, we can't Pull them out they are too deep. We were able to manage to get 3 out, but the others are very deep in. Every time we try to get ahold of one, (3 of us, 2 trying to hold her still, 1 getting the tick) she jerks and lunges we are worried about hurting her with the tweezers. I gave her a dose of Bravecto today, first time trying that. Do you have any suggestions? Do I need to take her to vet to get them out? Please help

Hi there, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear about Sheba's little butt problem. I wouldn't mess with the remaining ticks, as if she's not letting you get them, you could potentially pull off their bodies and leave the heads, which could cause further irritation or infection. If you just gave the Bravecto, give it some time to work - it can take 12 hours to kill ticks that have latched on. If they aren't gone by tomorrow morning, let the vet take a look. This isn't an emergency right now, although it may give you the heebie-jeebies. Good luck, and I hope that Sheba's little friends die quickly!
