My cat's urine is dark. Is dark pee a sign of dehydration or illness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My moms cat Phoebe is approx 10 years old and was rescued from a shelter after being found abandoned (and declawed on all 4 feet). This is a photo of urine from her litter pan. We’re worried it looks too dark. Any opinion is appreciated thank you so much.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pheobe. I agree that it does look dark. Has she had free access to water today? If she is a bit dehydrated, then the urine will be darker than normal. It does not appear to contain blood which is good. Offer her plenty of water and if it is still dark tomorrow, then she should see her veterinarian for a urinalysis. I hope this information helps!
