Why is my German Shepherd losing massive hair? Thyroid or allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 90 lbs

MY 8-9 year old German Shepherd is experiencing massive hair loss! He is miserable. He is a rescue tripod and I'm told he does have a cancer knot in his remaining front leg. I've tried everything! No exposure to chemicals. Tried pennicillin shots. Didn't help. He's taken tramadol in the past for pain and a steroid but has not taken anything in at least a year. Thyroid?

A low thyroid is definitely a possibility that is contributing. Allergies from something in the environment, fleas or food can also play a role. The dark pigmentation with the creases on the legs can also be a secondary yeast or bacterial infection that is making this worse. he needs to see a vet to have the thyroid checked and address the skin infection. From there a medicated shampoo in a weekly bath is helpful. They can see what might be the underlying cause and get you appropriate medicine to try to stay ahead of it in the future.
