Why is my dog aggressive, peeing, and running away after owner's loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 10 years and 3 months old

Hey how are you? Sorry to be a pain but I need to ask, right my dad passed away in October and he had a dog, the dog only listened to him and since then Mum took over looking after him but she’s disabled so can get out to walk him (he’s been for walks) and big garden. But every time he gets let out in the garden he runs away, and he pee’s and poops everywhere in the house even if he’s just been outside, and you can’t go near him he will start to growl and try bite you.

I'm sorry you lost your dad, and I'm sorry that Askit is having trouble adjusting to living alone with your Mum. My first suggestion would be to hire someone to walk and play with Askit as he has been used to doing, as it seems clear that his behavioral problems are either due to the sudden and severe decrease in activity or the fact that he is missing the bond he had with your dad. The second suggestion, if that doesn't help, is to consider rehoming him with someone who can spend more time giving him what he needs. I know this sounds like it will be difficult, but it will be what is best for Askit, as well as your Mum.
