Dog UTI: Is 2 weeks of Cipro enough if blood in urine stopped?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 4 months old | 45 lbs

Hi my 9 y/o 43 pound girl was put on Ciprofloxcin 250mg once per day for 2 weeks for blood in urine. Urine culture shows Proteus mirabilis (greater than 100k organisms per ML.) I know the best thing to do is to get another urine culture after the course of antibiotics but I am on a budget, so I am wondering if the 2 weeks of Ciprofoxcin will suffice. I haven't seen any blood since she started treatment. Thank you!

Hi there! This is definitely something that you could discuss with the veterinarian who is treating Val. It's true that we normally recommend repeating a urine culture after finishing the meds to make sure that the infection has cleared, but I know that sometimes this isn't financially feasible. In that case, your vet may be okay with having you do a 2-3 week course of cipro and then monitor for a return of her symptoms.
