My dog coughs after exercise. Is it kennel cough or heart issue?

If a dog has kennel cough , would it be coughing when it's not active , or can it have kennel cough and only cough after exercise ? I just got the sweetest 7 month old pup , and he coughs after he runs , and gets tired quickly . He also has runny eyes , but not too bad. I am wondering if he has kennel cough , or if it's something heart related. I have to wait two weeks for my paycheck to take him to the vet , so just trying to find out what I can in the meantime.

Congrats on your new puppy, but I'm sorry Kasha isn't doing well! Typically you would see coughing all the time with kennel cough, and an increase of the coughing after exercise. It certainly could be a heart problem if this coughing only occurs after running and he tires easily, but there is a chance it could be a mild case of kennel cough or a respiratory infection. Until you can get him into the vet, rest him as much as possible. Don't let him run around, keep him quiet, and make sure he keeps eating and drinking. If he appears congested, you can try putting him in a room with a humidifier or taking him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower. The steam may help with any congestion. Best of luck.

I would take him into a vet for an exam. The vet can confirm if he does have kennel cough, and can prescribe medications to help with his symptoms. Any dog with kennel cough should be isolated for at least two weeks, possibly longer depending on the severity of the infection. Keep him in a well-humidified area, and use a harness instead of a collar to minimize coughing. Rest him for at least seven days to minimize irritation of the airways caused by excessive coughing. Give any medications as prescribed by your veterinarian. You can bring Author into the bathroom with you while you have a shower, as the steam may help with the respiratory irritation. What are symptoms of kennel cough or heart disease in a Maltese mix? How do I recognise them? Asking because parents don't believe that it could be dangerous for her life.
With kennel cough, sudden onset of a severe cough is typically seen, which may be productive or non-productive. A productive cough sounds wet and produces mucus, while a non-productive cough is dry and does not produce any mucus. This cough can sound like a honk. Gagging, retching, sneezing, and nasal discharge may also be seen. When a dog with kennel cough has their throat palpated, the dog can be induced to cough. The cough can also be exacerbated by exercise, excitement, or pressure on the neck from their collar. With heart disease, you see a cough that is produced after or during exercise, as well as exercise intolerance. A dog cannot seem to play like they used to in the past. This cough will progress and get worse over time, happening when they are resting as well. You can see episodes of syncope, when a dog suddenly faints.

With his consistent symptoms, I recommend having him seen by the vet. There are many causes of respiratory symptoms, including heart disease, and I’m a bit concerned about his decreased exercise tolerance. Cantona may need medication to manage what’s driving his symptoms. Your vet will likely recommend chest x-rays to different a respiratory problem from a heart problem. Hope this helps!

Hello, sorry to hear about your dog. There is definitely a possibility that your puppy may have introduces something such as kennel cough to your other dog. Most often with kennel cough you will hear a dry cough, hacking cough. Kennel cough most often resolves on its own, but if his signs persist, visit your veterinarian for further assessment. You may also want to ensure your puppy is fully vaccinated and monitor for him developing a cough as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Coughing can happen due to many diseases. However, in a puppy I would be more suspicious of something like kennel cough which is common in puppies. Ideally, a physical examination and thoracic radiographs are performed to help with the diagnosis/assessment of this. Brady's cough could have a number of underlying causes, such as heart disease, a heavy parasite burden (some worms can migrate through the lungs), heartworm disease (highly unlikely due to Brady's age), tracheal sensitivity, kennel cough (still a possibility), among others. Since the cough has recurred, Brady should see his vet for a recheck exam and may need chest x-rays and a fecal exam to check for parasites. I hope he's feeling better soon!

It is not normal for her to be coughing after playing but if she has a touch of kennel cough then that may be why she is coughing. I suggest you get her to your veterinarian for an exam to be on the safe side.

If your puppy is coughing, but otherwise feels happy, is eating, playing and very active it could indeed be kennel cough, or lung worm infection or other lung infection. I suggest you take him to a vet for an exam, and since the coughing is excessive, the vet can prescribe an antitussive, antibiotics if needed and anti-inflammatory medication, if necessary.

In a young dog like him, something like kennel cough needs to be considered. I recommend that you have Kingsley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. If it is kennel cough often times it resolves with supportive care including antibiotics. Good luck and have a good night!

Since there has been no improvement, consider a recheck or second opinion. Kennel cough typically resolves on its own within a week or two but the cough can linger for longer. In older dogs, younger dogs and immune compromised dogs, it may lead to secondary infections and pneumonia. Chest xrays should be done to assess the heart and lungs. An echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) can be done to assess cardiac architecture and function. Afterwards, cardiac medications can be dispensed if indicated.
