My cat's eye is irritated, watery, and she won't open it. Vet or home remedy?

I noticed this irritation with my cat's eye yesterday. I thought my question posted but I guess it didn't. Is there a home remedy for this or should I take her to the vet? There's no discharge, but her eye did get a bit watery, and she won't open it all the way.

I would take Valentine to the vet. There aren't home remedies for eye problems, and because leaving eye problems untreated can lead to vision loss, it's very important to have your cat seen by a vet promptly. I'd give your vet a call today to make an appointment for her. Sorry if your question didn't get answered or posted yesterday, I hope this helps!

Seeing a vet is definitely the best choice as a full ophthalmological examination is required to reach a diagnosis an prescribe the correct treatment. Try to avoid scratching as the eye problem can get worse. I suggest to use a buster collar to prevent further scratching and damage. Hi. One of the feral cats I feed has a eye infection. Her eye is shut, not very swollen, not oozing any pus. She doesn't seem to be in any pain. I can't afford to take her to the vet, and she won't let me near her. Is there anything I can do??
Hi, and thanks for your question. That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Unfortunately there is not much you can effectively do back home without veterinary assistance. A picture of it would help to give you further advices. My cat was in a fight last night and now has a sore eye. There is a bit of discharge from the eye and she is able to half open the eye. I have cleaned it with warm water. There are no obvious injuries and shes otherwise okay, just her pride a bit dam
Yes, I think she should see a vet for treatment. She could have a scratch on her cornea and need eye drops. If there are any bite wounds than she should also be on an oral antibiotic to prevent infection. Have your vet take a look at her to determine the best way to treat.

This could be a viral or bacterial infection that may need to be addressed by your veterinarian. There is likely nothing OTC that can be given to resolve it. An exam would be strongly recommended to prevent permanent damage or loss of vision.

This often happens with conjunctivitis (aka pink eye), but can happen if the outside of the eye gets scratched or there is a problem within the eye. Conjunctivitis can be caused by a few different infections, but is commonly caused by a virus that most cats harbor and comes out during times of stress. These infections can become complicated with bacterial infections though and cause more problems. If the eyes appear worse and/or have a lot of yellow/green discharge, then I would recommend taking her to the vet for an evaluation. They will be able to better inspect the eye and provide the most appropriate treatment. For now, you can flush the eye 3-4 times a day with saline (can get this at the pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section) to help clean and soothe it. Hello! There are some stray cats in my neighborhood that I feed. One, I noticed the other day had mucous in the corner of her eye. She doesn't come around every day, but she came around this morning and the eye is now closed. I am worried about her.
It's always tough trying to deal with feral cats. The best option would be to take her to the vet (maybe they could spay her at the same time? Not all vets would be able to do that, but might be worth asking). The vet could sedate her, check out her eye, and vaccinate her for rabies at least. There is a risk of her biting, but we usually can take appropriate precautions to avoid this. If you do take her in, ask your vet ahead of time what preferences they have for type of carrier etc so that they have the best chance of successfully looking at her. It will probably end up costing you a decent amount of money to take her in, because of the extra time +/- sedation that will be required (plus costs for testing, vaccines, medications), so just be aware of that ahead of time. That said, to answer your question about care at home - she could have a viral eye infection (very very common in cats), or it could have gotten worse and become a bacterial infection or an ulcer. My cats eye has looked pretty irritated since she woke up this morning I thought maybe my other cat scratched it but there is no scratch on the eye
Since she does not want to hold it open, it may be an abrasions on the cornea from a previous foreign body such as a hair or a small scratch that is not big or deep. It can be from allergies or a mild respiratory infection that is early and just starting. You can flush the eye with saline eye drops and apply a warm compress if she will let you. If this does not get better in 24 hours or you notice further respiratory signs then I would get her checked by a vet as soon as possible

Luna needs to be examined by the veterinarian. When pets squint their eyes, it indicates pain. The most common causes are a scratch on the cornea or a viral infection. Both of these conditions are not only painful, but they can get worse quickly. She needs medication to treat the eye and an Elizabethan collar to prevent any rubbing which could make it worse. My semi feral outside cat came home with a red and watery eye that has some discharge. She wont let me look at it. Aside from taking her to the vet what can I do?
I'm sorry Cherry has eye discharge. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do for her at home. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any eye problem is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Given she won't let you look at it, it's like very painful to Cherry. I would have Cherry seen by a vet immediately for this, as it needs to be examined and treated right away.
