How can I encourage my shy rescue dog to play more freely at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 28 lbs

Leela is a rescue from Mexico and we adopted her about a month ago. Shes doing great and loves belly rubs, eats well and has no accidents inside the house. But my first dog, a Belgian Shepherd, is such a strong personality that she overshadows Leela. Leela doesn't play much inside the house and I'd love her to be playful and free. How do I encourage that?

This is going to take time and a lot of TLC and some one on one time. Give her lots of treat and get her to play more. Unfortunately, it just may not be in her personality to be as playful and free as the other dog. Every dog differs and some need different type of attention than others. It is just important to pay attention to these cues and treat each dog as such. Just give her more times and she will likely continue to come out of her shell but just know it may not be to the same degree as your other dog. I hope this helps!
