Why is my baby bunny's head swollen, lopsided, and shaking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed

I have a wild orphaned baby bunny who was head on the top is very swollen it is not hot to the touch and it feels a little bit squishy and you're able to touch it without him seeming to be in pain the bunny also holds his head sideways and can really only lay on one side I call him La P because he's a bit lopsided any idea what this might be I'm not sure because he is eating sleeping and using the bathroom like normal bunny, he will also shake from time to time

Hi there, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It's hard to tell from the pictures, but this little bun may have some cranial swelling going on. Hydrocaphalus, or swelling of the head, is not entirely uncommon in neonatal rabbits and can be life threatening. I strongly recommend getting this little bunny to a certified wildlife rehabilitator or a veterinarian as soon as possible, especially if she's shaking and is only able to lay on one side. This could be indicative of neurologic issues. In the meantime, keep her warm and quiet, and continue to feed her regularly. Good luck, and I hope that Loppy does well!
