How to stop my 12-week-old puppy from biting and nipping aggressively?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 28 days old | 1.5 lbs

I am a new Maltese mommy and I want to make sure we are training our puppy correctly when trying to correct her biting. She is 12 weeks and is constantly biting or nibbling. At firat she is soft but then gets more and more strong and amped up and telling her no at this point does not work like when she was just nipping at you. We know that she is just playing but it gets to a point where she is too aggressive and doesn’t want to listen what types of things can we do to correct her biting.

Hi there. Karsyn is very cute! It's normal for puppies to want to bite and use their mouths during play. You're correct that when she gets excited and "amped up," she won't be able to control herself and stop biting - so I would recommend redirecting her to a toy before things reach this point. If she does get over-excited and start using her mouth too hard, you can calmly put her in her crate or behind a baby gate with a chew toy for a few minutes to calm down. This behavior should resolve on its own as she gets older, so don't worry too much about it - just be patient and keep lots of chew toys handy :)
