How to help my senior dog with a raw, oozing skin sore on her belly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 14 years and 10 months old | 33 lbs

I am from India, living in a small town.my female rescue, about 15 yrs old, has some kind of severe skin sore on her underbelly, which has spread on to other areas. she is oozing pus and very raw. A vet from the city said it is a kind of skin cancer and started chemotherapy. Had the first one so far, 15 days ago. But she hasn't improved... how can I atleast help her feel more comfortable and help to dry the soreness?

I'd have to say that I'm concerned about that focal mass area that is pigmented black, but the rest of this lesion does not look like any type of skin cancer I have seen. If the vet is concerned that this is cancer, typically we debulk (remove as much as possible) or completely remove what we can before attempting chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is also best guided when we know exactly the type of tumor we are dealing with, as there are several types of cancers that can affect the skin of dogs. My advice would be to get a biopsy performed of this lesion and get an exact diagnosis before proceeding with treatment.
