How long can a new mother dog safely be away from her newborn puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Female | unspayed | 60 lbs

Mom had puts late Sat night/Early Sun morning. All is going well as far as feeding and all, though she seems to be going stir crazy. We haven't had her away from them more than 5 to 10 minutes to go outside to stretch and potty. How long can mom safely be away from the pups right now?

If the pups are kept warm, there is no problem with her staying away from the puppies for 1/2 hour. If she does not get stressed out by being away from them, you can take her for a walk around the block up to 1/2 hour and later on even longer. It is important that the puppies do not get cold. It is best to take her out after the puppies suckled, and now are sleeping. Make sure they are in a box, so they cannot start crawling around when mom is gone.
