Should I worry about IVDD if I neuter my dachshund puppy early?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 7 days old

I have two 20 week old short haired, minature dachshunds, male and female and brother and sister. I’m concerned about having the boy neutered too early. Are their links to IVDD if done too young? My vet nurse said she knew of no connections, yet dachshund websites like Kennel club suggest their could be a connection. I would like some professional advice from a vet please.

There is no clear link between early castration on disc problems in dogs. However, there is not much benefits in very early castration in dogs, in my opinion. My recommendation in your case is to spay your female puppy when she is 6-8 months old (as long as you are not going to breed from her) and castrate the boy when he is about 12 months old.
