What's this rash on my new puppy's elbow? Is it Demodex or ringworm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 months and 16 days old

What is this skin irritation? Just adopted him and he has a rash on his front right elbow. He is currently on Doxycycline 75mg BID for a UTI until 5/9 and just completed Albon 125mg I don't remember why he was on that.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bingo. I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian. Doxycycline can actually damage the enamel of the teeth in growing puppies. The Albon is typically used to treat an intestinal parasite known as coccidia. As for the skin, I would recommend a test to check for a mite known as demodex. It is a normal mite that lives in the hair follicles of dogs. Young puppies can experience an overgrowth though. This will present as hair loss and red areas of skin. Ringworm is a fungal infection that has the potential to look similar. In the meantime, you can try bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula. I hope this information helps!
