My indoor cat has a red circle on his head. Is it ringworm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My cat has this random red circle on his head right above his eye. It popped up there out of no where and I was wondering what it was. I thought maybe it was ringworm but I wasn’t sure how he got that because he’s an indoor cat?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal infection). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics/antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching. It does not appear to be ringworm but of course it could be. There is no way to diagnose a skin condition 100% with just a photo. It actually looks like he has scratched his head due to fleas. Even cats that don't go outside can get fleas. Fleas get inside the house all the time. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam. It looks like he will need some antibiotics for that. If you want to try and check him for fleas at home you can try. Here is an article on how to do this: https://www.wikihow.pet/Check-Cats-for-Fleas Hope this helps. Best wishes.
