Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs
My 5 year old male cat Travis has a bit of feline acne under his chin. It’s mainly remote to this area, bar one or two marks on the inside of his lip. His general grooming is good and I switched his food bowl round to a metal one about a year ago after finding out that this could help. Recently it seems to be getting a little worse. There’s no sign of infection, no redness/blood/swelling, and there is no evidence of discomfort. Can you advise if there’s anything I can buy to treat at home? Thanks

Use a warm compress to soothe the area. Clean daily using dilute chlorhexidine or a mild cleanser containing benzoyl peroxide. Rinse the are thoroughly and pat dry. Try not to get any in his mouth. If the acne doesn't resolve, have Travis examined by your veterinarian.

Home treatments include gentle washing of the chin once or twice daily with a mild soap, benzoyl peroxide, chlorhexidine cleanser. For pustules, warm water compresses may help soothe and heal. He may need an oral antibiotic and anti-inflammatory so if the condition persists than he will need to be examined by your vet for treatment. If he has any fleas than he should be treated with a medication, like Revolution or Frontline.

Hello. It looks like Jacky has what we call feline chin acne, an allergic condition. Clean the area gently with an antiseptic skin cleanser like Hibiclens ( avail. at all pharmacies ), & then apply a small dab of over the counter hydrocortisone cream. This should heal things up in a few days, but if it re-occurs, you may need to find the underlying cause & your veterinarian can certainly help you with this. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I recommend purchasing Douro 3% Chlorhex pads, VetOne KetoHex Antiseptic Pet Wipes, or MalAcetic Wet Wipes or Malaseb antibacterial/anti-fungal wipes from chewy.com or petco.com and wiping the acne three times a day for 14 days. If the lesions don’t improve within a week with topical treatment, returning to your vet for a recheck and possibly a course of oral antibiotics such as Simplicef will likely help. Good luck!
