What's the best and safest way to neuter a 3-6 month old pygmy goat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 6 days old | 45 lbs

I have a pygmy goat I bought from the sale barn. I don't know his exact age. He is somewhere around 3-6mo. I am worried about banding him due to his age. Should I just let the Vet castrate him? I live in TX and I know I have to do it soon due to the heat and flies. What is the best route for my buckling? He is a pet, but I have females and don't want kids. What is the best age range to band goats? I figure band around 8-10wks, is this appropriate?

Do not band him at this age. It is very very painful. Also there is a chance of him getting a tetanus infection if he is not vaccinated against clostridial infections. It would be much better to have him castrated by the ver (either open castration or with a burdizzo, which is where the seminal and blood vessels are squeezed to where there is no more blood flow to the testicles) I personally do not think banding is a good idea as it is very painful over a long period of time, whereas castration via burdizzo is a 2 second pain and does the job just as well.
