My dog had head trauma. Is anesthesia for neutering safe for him?

Hi! I have been needing to get my male dog neutered but I am afraid because he has been knocked unconscious when he was younger (accident by my grandad and his golfclub) and he has recently fell out of a higher window(did not pass out or act hurt). I am afraid there will be a chance he wont wake up if I get him neutered. Is there any chance my dog can be fixed with out anything happening?

It sounds like poor Petie has been through a lot in his young age! Although any anesthetic carries risks, neutering is typically a very safe procedure. It's a surgery that vets do all the time, and it's low risk. There is a very good change he can be neutered without anything happening, but unfortunately I cannot 100% guarantee that everything will be ok (you can never guarantee that with any surgery). I can say that many, many dogs go through this procedure without a problem, and the risks are very low. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Scamp is super cute! I think his risks are small. I do not think his spinal deformity increases his risk at all. The collapsing trachea is a mild risk. Canine neuters are quick procedures. Most Veterinary hospitals do a wonderful job monitoring while your pet is under anesthesia and in recovery. The pets are intubated, on oxygen and inhaled gas, have EKG, blood pressure and pulse oximetry hooked up. They are also on IV fluids. Due to his collapsing trachea the recovery period is the most important part for him. Risks for Scamp would be coughing and inflammation of his airway in recovery and I think this is small. Other causes for anesthetic and surgical complications are VERY rare and unpredictable (bleeding, cardiac or respiratory arrest, drug reactions, death, etc). I have a 14 year jack Russell. He has congested heart failure. He takes lasik and benzaril. He has a tumor in one of his tedticles. The vet wants to neuter him. I’m worried about he under going anesthesia
I don't blame you for being concerned! You're right that congestive heart failure does increase the risk associated with anesthetic procedures, so we want to be very cautious about going forward with surgery in dogs who have this problem. I would recommend sitting down with your veterinarian to discuss the pros and cons of doing the neuter surgery in Wesley's case. In particular, you may want to ask about his life expectancy with congestive heart failure, and whether it's likely that the testicular tumor will progress enough to cause any serious problems before that. If the tumor appears to be slow-growing and is not currently bothering him, it may be reasonable to leave it alone rather than take the risk of surgery.

My dog, Prince is 11 years old. Around a month back we observed hematurea. So the vet told us to undergo castration surgery. Is it safe to undergo this surgery at this age ? Is there a life risk? He is an active, healthy dog.
I am sorry to hear about Prince. I am assuming your vet did a work-up including urinalysis and imaging (x-ray and ultrasound) to determine that a neuter is the recommended treatment for the hematuria. I am assuming that if they recommend a neuter it is because the issue is due to the prostate. If a work-up wasn't done to be certain this is the issue I would recommend one be done. We do have pets at this age go under anesthesia regularly, often for dental work. While anesthesia does pose risks for pets of any age, most do just fine, but it is recommended that they have pre-anesthetic bloodwork done to ensure that liver and kidney function are normal. I also recommend use of an IV catheter and fluids during anesthetic procedures and good anesthetic monitoring including pulse oximetry, blood pressure, and EKG in older patients. Doing neutered my male cat is risky?is there any risk or bad effect to do neutered?
A trained vet doctor performing a cat neuter is very safe. Cats are actually much safer than dogs to neuter. In order to make sure Vanilla doesn't feel the surgery, he will be given anesthesia. Anesthesia always has some level of risk, but again, in the hands of a trained vet doctor, the anesthesia is very safe. I hope that helps and I hope all is well with Vanilla.

My 12yr old yorkie cross has got a grade 5 heart murmur and enlarged prostate but neutering will be too risky under anesthesia because of the heart murmur is there any other treatment
Denzel is adorable! Since he has had 12 years of exposure to testosterone, neutering him at this point will not decrease his existing prostate enlargement. Anesthesia with a louder heart murmur can be slightly more high risk, but can still be performed in many cases after a cardiologist evaluation with an echocardiogram and cautious anesthetic monitoring. Consider discussing the risks vs. benefits of neutering Denzel at this point with your vet, but it is unlikely to change his prostate issue. I hope that all goes well!

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Biggi. Please do not be afraid of the surgery to neuter him. It may not take care of all his problems with the prostrate gland, but may help. As long as Biggi is in good health as evidenced by normal blood work, has no obvious cardiac or pulmonary problems, then neutering him should not put him in any danger. If the liver enzymes are elevated but liver function is normal there is probably not a significant increased risk under anesthesia. You could talk to your veterinarian about checking bile acids if it seems like this might be helpful; bile acids can help determine whether or not the liver is functioning normally. Sometimes a biliary mucocele is surgically corrected so you also may want to talk to your veterinarian about rechecking the mucocele if liver enzymes are still elevated.

While any anesthesia carries a risk, spaying is generally a very safe procedure. The risks of anesthesia increase as a dog ages (I'm specifically referencing senior dogs like 10 years and older), but there are few risks for a young and healthy puppy. Your vet is right she could be ill in the future if you don't spay her. Not spaying her leaves her at risk of developing a pyometra in the future. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and spaying the dog is part of the treatment of a pyometra. That surgery is high risk due to the severity of the illness in the dog from the infection, and it costs thousands to perform. In addition, dogs who are spayed are at an increased risk of developing mammary tumors. Of these mammary tumors, 50% of them are malignant. For her health, it is best to spay her now. I would speak with your vet about getting it done. I hope this helps!

What is the chance an animal dies while getting fixed? If they do die, what happens? Do they keep the animal there? Do you take it home?
With any surgery there is always a risk of death. But in most animals spay or neuter is a relatively safe procedure. Some things can be done to make it safer. Discuss with your vet about doing preanesthetic bloodwork, having an IV catheter and IV fluids during the procedure. If a pet does die it may depend on the clinic if they have options for cremation or burial or have your take a body home. In a young puppy, birth defects are always a strong suspicion and a specialist ultrasound by a cardiologist really is the best option. This will help to determine the actual site and type of heart problem and is the only way to diagnose what is going on. A definitive diagnosis will guide the most appropriate management with regards to surgery or medication as well as providing information on long term prognosis and likely consequences as he gets older. Most heart murmurs do not require medical treatment nor do they exclude the possibility of general anesthesia although careful planning and monitoring is recommended throughout any procedures
