My cats fight after vet visit. How to make them friends again?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

I have two female cats. The bigger one is 14 months and smaller is 8 months old. They were friends and sleeping together every night. Last weekend the smaller one spent two days in vet for an operation and now she is okay. But since she came back from the vet they are like enemies. hissing and running from each other. They hit each other some times. Should I be worry about this because they never fought before? What should I do to make them friends again?

There does seem to be an unusual phenomenon that when one animal attends the vet for a time its companion can react badly on its return. Possibly due to unfamiliar smells. Usually it settles after a week or so. If not you could try bathing the cat or invest in a pheromone diffuser to try and settle them.
