My kitten has FVR, fever, and severe breathing issues. ER time?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 5 lbs

6 month old kitten diagnosed with FVR. now has rhino virus. tested negative for leukemia and AIDS. It’s been about a week, & 3 visits later, she still has a high fever and is very congested. Breathing is abnormal—mouth open slowly, can tell she’s trying hard to breathe(our biggest concern). heart rate is fast. She is being fed by syringe and receiving pedialyte by syringe. receiving baby aspirin for fever and was given a 14 day antibiotic vaccine. should we let it ride it’s course or go to ER?

If you think Juliette still has a fever and is having difficulty breathing I would recommend going to the ER to be safe. It is possible that the trouble breathing is due to congestion and complete blockage of her nostrils, but occasionally cats can develop pneumonia secondary to a respiratory infection and chest x-rays might be recommended. Trouble breathing is always a serious sign in a cat! I hope she's feeling better soon.
