My dog has a crusty nose and discharge, but acts normal. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 15 years and 10 months old | 40 lbs

My dog recently has gotten a crusty nose with some nasal discharge. She does not seem to be lethargic or lacking any energy. She acts normal. Her nose has been like this for about 2 weeks now. At one point was sniffling a lot but that seems to have gone away. I can not tell what color the nasal drip is.

She could have an infection or possibly an auto-immune disease. Since this has been going on for 2 weeks, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and other medications to help treat.

Poor Ellie! It is difficult to say from the picture but it looks like a discharge from that nostril. If she is having This from both sides of her nose This could be an upper respirstory infection, the canine flu, or even pneumonia. If it is only on one side then I would be more concerned about a bacterial infection, a fungal infection, or even a tumor in the nose. I would have your vet take a look at her so they can determine the cause and get her started on the proper meds. Your vet will be able to do blood work, X-rays and even bacterial or fungal cultures if needed. I hope this helps! If This doesn’t answer you question please set up a consult or write to us again in the forum with more details of what’s going on with sweet Ellie. Thank you!
