My dog quickly loses interest in toys. Is he bored or maturing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 49 lbs

My dog is behaving a little strangely. He doesn't show much interest in his toys and even with new toys he plays only for 2-3 minutes like fetching it a couple of times. Sometimes he even asks us to play and then stops showing interest in a few minutes. He seems active otherwise ,especially at 10-11 pm . What is wrong?

It sounds ilke he is just bored with the toys. No medical concerns here if he is just losing interest in his toys quickly. You can try swapping out his toys every few days to see if you can regain his interest. Putting away half of them, and then swapping them out completely with the other half every few days. Also he is maturing at this age so he losing interest in excessive play is natural. As long as he is eating, drinking, urinating and defecating normal, I would assume this to be a natural maturing process for Cooper. I see that he is a large breed dog also. Usually between 12-18 months is when large breed dogs do thier final growth process, and begin to settle in mature adulthood. A decrease in play is entirely natural and expected. Try to do different activities with him such as going to dog parks, puppy play camps and more social activities. This may peak his interest more than playing with toys on his own. Best wishes with your pet Cooper. I hope that he finds a new favorite hobby soon. Take care.
