Newborn kittens won't nurse from mom cat's lower nipples. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat just gave birth. The kittens are doing well and eating regulary. However, my cat has 2 bottom nipples that are full and for some reason, the kittens are avoiding drinking from those 2 nipples. Its been a few days and I don’t want her bottom nipples to be swollen. I think it’s the way shes feeding them . She feeds them by sitting up and she never lays on her back .Should I be concern? What should I do?

If the nipples are not hot or painful and your cat is well in herself (she is not lethargic and is eating and drinking well) there is most likely nothing to worry about. You may try to put the kittens on the bottom nipples and see if they will latch and if the mum would let them feed from these nipples. If you noticed that the nipples became hot and painful you should get your cat checked by your local vet as these may be signs of mastitis.
