Dog not eating, vomiting 5 days post-neuter. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 10 months old | 18 lbs

My dog was neutered 5 days ago. This is her 3rd day she has eaten nothing- refusing all food, completely disinterested. She is barely drinking, I have to sit beside her and use a syringe to squirt water into her mouth. She was given magnesium hydroxide and injection of morphine by vet yesterday but this hasn’t helped at all. She has vomited every day since operation including this morning. Vet said her temp and heart rate all fine. What do I do?

I am sorry to hear that Rosie is not well. This is very uncommon to see a dog being so unwell 5 days after neutering. I would strongly recommend you to take Rosie back to your vet and ask to perform some investigation to make sure that she is ok. Vomiting could be a side-effect of general anaesthesia or morphine injections but in some cases vomiting in post-operative period may be due to kidney malfunction. Also, infection within the abdominal cavity causing vomiting and lethargy is possible. To be on a safe side, Rosie should have a blood test and abdominal scan done as soon as possible.
