My puppy won't stop barking when I clean. How can I train him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 3 days old | 6 lbs

My puppy barks alot. Like when we need to clean the house He doesn’t let us. So we keep him in his room with a member. But he barks alot, maybe he wants to go outside. We can’t let him go outside as we use phenyl and we don’t want him to lick that. What should i do to make him understand that he needs to be quiet.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would suggest using a citronella spray collar or bark collar and see if this helps deter Austin from barking. You can also try using a spray bottle filled with water and every time he barks, spray him in the face lightly and say "no!" or use a can filled with coins and shake it loudly and throw it on the ground near Austin when he barks and say "no!". I hope this helps with the barking! These tricks worked great for my own pet but it took patience and persistence. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. Please remember to rate this answer as helpful or not. Thank you!
