What to do when cat is agitated after surgery and meds don't work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Balinese | Female | spayed | 6.5 lbs

Hello from Indonesia,   Our cat had surgery for a bad infected wound. Wrestling in her cage, she broke open the stitches right after, and also hurt 2 paws. Another operation is planned soon, but no proper postoperative chemical constrain protocol have been offered, only acepromazine & Diazepam which don't work for her: She still has sudden, strong bouts of agitation. Unfortunately, Gabapentin & Buprenorphine are not available here. Do you have any suggestion ? Many thanks for you help

Acepromazine and diazepam at appropriate doses should be appropriate for post operative sedation and relaxation. However, neither of these drugs provide any pain control. I would consider adding an opioid-buprenorphine is my preferred opioid in cats- but since it is not available you may want to consider hydromorphine or fentanyl (in hospital) or tramadol (at home). NSAIDs are also an option but these have no sedative effect.
