Why is my old, overweight dog crying and panting after a walk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 11 years and 3 months old | 85 lbs

My girl is 11 , overweight, and has arthritis. We went on a walk today and over done it I think. I had to call for someone to come get her in the car. I could tell she just couldn't go anymore and would never make it back on her own. Once home we cooled her down slowly. She did have water, and temp was 82 and windy. She has had some water , doesn't want food. She gets Golden Paste regularly for arthritis. She is crying and hollers if I try to move her. Nose running a lot and panting hard

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sadie Blue. She sounds extremely painful. There is a potential that she is still over heated as well. Ideally, she should see a veterinarian tonight. She needs pain control and to see if anything more serious is going on with her such as heat exhaustion. Being over weight, it will be more difficult for her to cool herself. Be sure not to give her any over-the-counter pain medication as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps you are able to get her feeling better soon. Good luck!

I am sorry to hear about Sadie Blue. I would recommend taking her to the vet (the emergency vet if your vet isn't open now) based on your description. She could have suffered from heat stroke. Even if her body temperature cooled down, it can cause internal problems such as trauma to the gastrointestinal tract and blood clotting problems. You can read more about heat stroke at https://www.vin.com/veterinarypartner/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951333 . Another possibility is that she could been in a good deal of pain from overexerting herself and need prescription pain medication. The effects of heat stroke can be life threatening so the safest course of action is to bring her in as soon as possible! Best of luck to you and Sadie Blue.
