My dog squats but won't pee outside in the wet. Is it a UTI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 8 months and 3 days old | 35 lbs

My 7 month old lab mix has always hated water from the day I got her. It freaks her out for some strange reason (perplexing, as labs are typically decribed as “water dogs”). Today we had a massive thunderstorm and even though it has subsided, the entirety of my city is sopping wet and even covered porches suffered. My dog was whining and signaling she needed to go pee, so I took her out. But she’s refusing to potty in the wet. She’ll squat and everything but won’t let any urine out at all. Help?

Normally of dogs refuse to urinate in certain situations they won’t posture or even try to go. If Lexie is posturing to urinate but nothing is coming out that sounds more to me like cystitis, or a urinary tract infection. If she isn’t back to normal by tomorrow then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.
