When can my puppy safely socialize at dog parks and meet-ups?

Hello. Your new puppy can interact with any of your own pets if they have been fully vaccinated. Otherwise, we recommend keeping your puppy at home & away from all other dogs, dog parks, or any places where dogs might congregate until the full series of puppy shots are finished. That means he will be able to interact with other dogs after he has received his 12 week & 16 week boosters. Keep him well protected until he is 4 months of age. I should also mention that if your puppy receives his first puppy shot at around 6 weeks of age, he should actually be vaccinated again at 8 weeks ( a lot of breeders like to vaccinate at 6 weeks, but this is too early ). I personally recommend not socializing with other dogs until after the puppy is fully vaccinated at 16 weeks of age if you do not know the other dogs's vaccination status. Now if there are dogs who belong to friends of yours and you know for certain the dogs are vaccinated, Luke can socialize with them. No dog parks, however. I hope this helps!

However, I do not see a bordetella vaccination for kennel cough. I would recommend having this done at some point to help prevent him from getting kennel cough. I hope this helps! Ideally, no. It would not be safe to have Glock around other dogs until he is at least 14 weeks of age which is the age at which he would typically need to be to have his last booster of the Distemper Parvo core vaccine, and at which age he would also have had his other two core vaccines, Rabies and Bordatella (which protects against the respiratory infection often referred to as Kennel Cough). The reason for this is that puppy immune systems are still highly vulnerable to the parvovirus infection in particular, even after a single booster (he will likely need the Distemper Parvo vaccine 3-4 times, 3-4 weeks apart before he is fully protected/vaccinated). The parvovirus can easily cause life threatening diarrhea, dehydration and weakness requiring extensive ER care which can often cost thousands of dollars and isn’t always successful. It is safest to keep him indoors / away from other dogs/ or at least away from public sidewalks and definitely away from dog parks until about 14 weeks o

DAPP (distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, parainfluenza) vaccines or equivalents are typically given every 3-4 weeks from 6-8 weeks of age until at least 16 weeks of age. A rabies vaccine and some optional vaccines will likely be given during these booster vaccine appointments. Your puppy will not be fully protected by these vaccines until 2-3 weeks after the last vaccine - generally around 18-19 weeks of age. Try to keep your puppy away from other unknown dogs until 2-3 weeks after his last vaccine (aside from housemate dogs or even adult dogs owned by family/friends that you can confirm are up to date on all of their vaccines). Some of these viruses can remain in the soil for years, so your puppy could even be at risk walking around your neighborhood if another dog has previously shed parvovirus, for example. For his own safety and the safety of other dogs, it would be best to wait until he has received his complete first year round of vaccines including the second parvovirus vaccine which usually is given at around 4-5 months of age though that depends on when they received the first set of vaccines. Yes - as long as his most recent booster was given at four months of age or older, he should be considered fully vaccinated. He will need a rabies vaccine from your veterinarian when you get a chance to have this done, but in the meantime it should be fine for him to be around other dogs. Congrats on your new puppy! :)

Socialization in controlled environments is good (such as puppy classes where all puppies must show proof of vaccination) or with friends that you trust to have their dogs vaccinated. I would not recommend going to public parks or pet stores until 1 month after the last vaccination (usually at 16 weeks of age).

Puppies who are not fully vaccinated are most at risk of acquiring an infectious disease. However, this is the same age when puppies are most impressionable and need to be socialized. Puppy classes are a great option. Only chose a place that requires proof of vaccines on the pups. If you have friends with dogs that you know are fully vaccinated, then he can meet them. You must avoid dog parks, neighborhood parks or big pet supply stores where dogs are allowed so that he is not interacting with potentially unvaccinated dogs or their waste. If you do a puppy class in store, carry him in and out and don't meet other dogs on the way. I hope this information helps!

It's fine for Nova to be "out and about" as long as you avoid high risk places like dog parks, pet stores, etc. where strange dogs of unknown health status spend a lot of time. You can walk her in your neighborhood, take her to visit friends with healthy vaccinated dogs, etc. It's actually not advisable to wait until your puppy's vaccinations are completely finished to start socializing her, because if you do this you will have already missed her socialization period (6 - 16 weeks of age in puppies).
