Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 5 lbs

Dog was losing fur on tail now it seems to be regrowing but seems a bit spotty. Theres no fleas and is not itchy with no other symptoms. He is a 5 pound chi who's about 8. Any thoughts? Advice? Can you see where it's "spotty"?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If the hair is growing back in the area, the original problem has likely resolved. It could have been from an allergy that caused Buddy to chew the hair off of the tail. This could also be due to a skin infection, skin parasite or hormonal disease causing the hair loss. I would monitor this for now and if it does not resolve or if it worsens, I would have a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. Please remember to rate this answer as helpful or not. Thank you!
