My senior dog is bloated, not eating, and breathing fast. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 11 years and 5 months old | 120 lbs

My dog is 12 years old and turns 13 this year. She is a black lab and recently she hasn't been eating and she is really bloated as of yesterday. She has had diarrhea for the past couple weeks and now she doesn't even squat when she goes to the bathroom because it hurts her hips. She just lays in one spot for a long period of time and all she eats is her treats. She is still drinking water though. I counted her respirations and it was 56 a minute. I was wondering if her organs are shutting down.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If you suspect that Rogue's abdomen is becoming larger, I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The symptoms you are seeing could be due to a systemic disease or infection so it would be best to have a veterinarian take a look at her and perform some diagnostic testing such as blood test and x-rays. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. The sooner she is seen the better. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. Please remember to rate this answer as helpful or not. Thank you!
