Why did my rabbit's crusty ear fall off? What should I do next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered

My rabbit has had a crusty ring around both of its ear about half way up his ears. That top half was crusty and dry/hard. I thought it might have been mites so I started the normal mite process we have done in the past (mineral oil and ear mite meds for cats) but now one of his ears has fell off and the bottom half is left. The has been no bleeding but maybe in one little spot but other than that nothing. He also acts fine other than he doesn’t like me putting the meds in which has been normal.

I am so sorry to hear about Scholtz! I would be concered we could have a vasculitis here that disrupted blood supply to the ear resulting in eventual death of the tissue. I would recommend an examination by a veterinarian to see if the other ear might be saved and to see if there are any signs of problems elsewhere in your bunny that might require treatment and what the possible cause of the vasculitis could have been.
