Is it normal for my Golden puppy to lose coat in summer and be thin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 2 days old | 6 lbs

My puppy has lost his full upper coat. Also it’s summer here and it’s too hot. Is it normal? Also he is thin. The vet says he’s okay but i think he’s too thin. Do puppies shed there coat in sunmer? Will he ever become a beautiful golden with a perfect normal coat?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! yes dogs can shed or blow their undercoat in the summer. It is hard to predict what Austins adult coat with be. I agree it's a bit wiry. If he is pure bred gold and not a doodle mix I see no reason why his coat won't look like his parents. I think is just a bit underweight. I would increase his puppy food by 25%. Be sure he has been dewormed well and is on a high quality commercial puppy food. Diet and intestinal parasites can affect the coat as well as body weight. I wish you the best!
