Can I give my senior cat antibiotics for ear issues and wobbliness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 18 years and 2 months old | 8 lbs

My 17 year old cat is in heart & kidney failure (on subQ fluids). The last time he went to the vet for senior profile he went into cardiac distress & had to be sedated. Vet said no more checkups. 2 days ago he started scratching his ear, tilting his head and looks wobbly. No odor, pus or blood is present in his ear. I fear a middle/ inner ear infection or ruptured temp membrane. The otic antibiotics I have are not safe if that's the case. Can I give oral amoxicillin or orbax? I have them on hand

He really needs to be examined by a vet before treating him with any medications. He could have an ear infection that needs treatment but he could also have vestibular disease. If he gets stressed by going to the vet then you could try and find a mobile vet to come to your house and examine him. I don't recommend treating him with oral antibiotics since the exact cause has not been determined.
