Dog's tail is down, not playing, and won't eat. Is she in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 22 lbs

My dog is a pug x jack Russell. Usually her tail is curled up, like a typical pug, or straight behind her. For the past couple days it hasn’t been. She also hasn’t been nearly as active. Although she does go on walks - but she doesn’t want to play as much at home - eg, tug of war, fetch etc. She didn’t eat her dinner last night, which is very rare for her. Considering she was overweight and is now being given less food (on recommendation from a vet check up). She is a bit over a year old.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jess! The most common cause for a limp or down tail and decreased activity is back pain. Back pain can be from a slipped disk or a muscle strain or sprain. They tend to hurt and thus do not want to play or jump up or do stairs. Pain also affects the appetite. I highly recommend a Vet visit today as it is Friday. The vet should be able to elicit back pain on exam. I treat with anti-inflammatories, pain medications, muscle relaxants and strict rest. I wish Jess the best!
